Ford Fiesta

The reliable Ford Fiesta may not be the most exciting car, but it is a practical size and is great to introduce you to the roads before and after your driving test. You can pick up a 2010/2011 Fiesta for less than £5,000 which also has fair insurance premiums for a first time driver.

Fiat 500

Maybe one for the girls, this nifty car is manageable to drive and park. You can buy a 2008 plate for just under £5,000 and can choose from a whole host of colours and 2 engine sizes of either 1.2L or 1.4L. The interior is luxurious and it feels far more spacious than it looks.

Volkswagen Polo

A neat little car, suitable for everyone and guaranteed to provide a smooth and easy ride. A great car to start off your learning with and great once you have passed to help you get used to the roads. Models vary from a 1.2L to 1.4L. If you are feeling flush, you can get a 2011 plate Polo for less than £6,000; if you are on more of a budget you can get a 2006/2007 for around £3,000.

Mini

Some might say a predicable first car but a Mini provides a simple and easy to drive car to learn to drive in. A 2006 will be just under £6,000 and a 2010 plate for just under £8,000.

Vauxhall Corsa

Whether it’s the old shape or the new, the Vauxhall Corsa is a great little car for learning to drive. You can pick up a new shape 2007 model with low mileage for under £3,000.

Peugeot 107/Citreon C1/Toyota Aygo

A group of sibling cars, which are all incredibly similar and better still, at very similar cheap prices. You can get a 2012 plate for less than £5000.

Nissan Micra

It isn’t uncommon to spend less than £2,000 on a Nissan Micra; you can bag yourself a 2003 – 2005 model with 40,000 miles on the clock for just under £2,000. A great little car to get you off to a great start.

Suzuki Swift

A compact sporty looking number that’s great value for money, you can pick up a 2011 Suzuki for less than £5,000. A great car to get you started as well as looking the part.
