It’s not a surprise that new drivers fear driving on motorways once they’ve passed their driving test. You may have heard of schemes such as PassPlus, which give lessons to new drivers who have just passed their driving test.

These schemes are the only way drivers can get lessons on how to master the motorway and it’s been found that there is a lack of motorists utilising these lessons. However, these upcoming changes will hopefully tackle this issue.

The Upcoming Changes to Motorways Driving for Learners

The law is set to change from the 4th of June, this year, with qualified driving instructors being allowed to give voluntary lessons based around motorway driving to learner drivers (as long as their car has dual controls).

It will be up to the driving instructor to make the decision whether the learner driver is competent enough to have a motorway lesson.

These changes are being introduced in hopes that:

  • Learner drivers can receive training on how to join and leave the motorway correctly
  • Learners can put their theoretical knowledge into practice
  • Learners can experience driving and overtaking at higher speeds

It’s hoped that these changes will be made is to tackle the amount of road accidents that involves new drivers.

It hasn’t been revealed yet what affect this change of law will have on the current driving test.

What to do whilst waiting for these changes to happen?

Until then, you can always brush up on your knowledge on different kinds of roads first, (such as A roads and B roads) by taking out some learner driver insurance.
