Planning on learning to drive this year? We’ve compiled a handy list of everything you’ll need to help you along the way.

Provisional driving licence

Before you get behind the wheel, you’ll need a provisional licence in order to drive legally.

To apply for a provisional licence, you’ll need:

  • an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport
  • addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
  • your National Insurance number if you know it

You can apply on the official government website for £34 or apply via post for £45.

Another legal requirement for learners driving in their car, is to clearly display L-plates on the front and the back of the car. So, if you’re learning to drive soon, make sure you’ve got your L-plates ready!

For the official requirements of the L-plates, visit the official government website.

Don’t forget your L-plates!

Learner driver insurance

The secret to saving money and improving your chances of passing your driving test is private practice! Getting on the roads outside of your driving lessons is an essential part of building the confidence and gaining the skills it takes to get your full licence!

Here at InsureLearnerDriver, we can cover learners on their own cars or a borrowed one!

Highway code book

Knowledge of the Highway code is essential reading for anyone learning to drive. For one, it makes up a huge part of the theory test. Two, it will help you understand the official rules of the road, handy for driving in general!

Mobile phone

We live in the glorious 21st century, so if books aren’t your thing – why not download an app to revise for your theory test? Or follow us on Instagram for some handy driving tips?

Obviously make sure you’re leaving your phone out of sight when you’re actually driving.
