What Happens After I Pass My Driving Test? – Sorting Insurance

It’s not uncommon for a learner driver to pass their driving test and to ask their parents for help, when sorting insurance. There’s nothing explicitly wrong with that, but don’t you want to take your first step of independence yourself?

Insurance can be a jargon-filled affair, however, there’s a few things you need to understand to get your head around it, trust us!

We’ve broken it down into 5 simple points, so you can get driving as soon as possible, all by your own efforts!

1) Sorting out the driving home from the test

Some learner drivers get so overwhelmed by the day of their driving test that they forget about the drive home! There’s nothing more anti-climatic than passing your driving test and then having to sit in the passenger seat as you get chauffeured home!

With an InsureLearnerDriver policy, your covered for your driving test in the borrowed car of a friend or family members, or even your own. However, depending on the policy, you may be able to drive home after passing! Take a look at our diagram to see how it works:

In summary, if you have a InsureLearnerDriver policy which was valid for 7 days or over, you are covered for up to 3 hours after passing your driving test to drive directly home (or to where it’s garaged).

2) Deciding on what you want from your policy

As a young driver, there’s many options to choose from when it comes to car insurance policies, so it can get a little confusing. The first thing to do in this situation is to outline what you want from an insurance policy. Do you want a Low price point? A Black box?  Reliable customer service?

The best thing to do is to take your time to research companies, their main values and what their customer’s experiences are like. You should also be able to provide a basic idea of how much you’ll be using the car and what for, as these factors may affect your policy price.

If you wish to join the Black Box revolution, in order to save money and drive safer, Sky Insurance offers a Young Drivers Scheme to suit most newly qualified drivers.

3) Research

Part of your research should be gathering quotes before purchasing. Whether you do this online, on the phone, or on comparison sites, getting your options together before deciding on a policy is a wise step. You don’t want to make the wrong decision and regret it – cancellation fees are not an expense you’ll want.

4) Payment process

Once you’ve decided on the policy you wish to take out, some companies will accept a payment plan which is spaced out over the year through instalments. Other companies may only accept one off payments for the year. Think about your own situation and what would work best for you.

5) Get driving

Once you’ve sorted out your policy, you should get the documents sent through and you can start driving! Make sure the dates are correct and to double check whether you need to wait for your Black Box to be installed if necessary. The only thing left to do is to make sure you’re driving safe out there!
