Provisional Drivers Insurance

It is often assumed that once you have your Provisional Licence that the only way to learn to drive is through a Driving Instructor - but this does not have to be the case. Once you have your licence, you can practice your driving skills in someone else's car providing you have an accompanying driver with you.

The current law states that the accompanying driver must be over 21 years of age, and have a current Full UK or EU Licence for 3 years - although for our short term provisional insurance policies, the driver must be over 25 and under 72 with a Full UK or EU Licence for over 3 years.

Provisional Driver Learning to Drive in Parent's Car

There are a few simple rules that apply when learning to drive in a parent's and meeting the Acceptance Criteria of our Provisional Driver Insurance policies -

  • you need to have a Provisional Licence
  • you need to be 17 years of age and above
  • you need to have a qualified accompanying driver with you at all times whilst driving
  • the accompanying driver must be over 25 yrs of age and under 72 yrs (the legal requirement is over 21)
  • you need to be displaying L-Plates (learner plates or the equivalent)

And finally, arrange some short term 'top up' cover to insure you comprehensively on the vehicle - this way the separate independent policy avoids any risk to the main policy on the vehicle.
